Today, Google is proud to announce the launch of the 2018 DNI Fund Report, which outlines the impact of projects funded. As for the evolutionary changes that take place in the digital world, journalists and publishers are getting more opportunities and as well as facing new challenges, but this news innovation project will help solve some of these challenges.

The Digital News Innovation Fund has supported publishers in their work for almost 3 years, with a commitment of €150 million to take off a peak start and also nurture innovative projects within the European news ecosystem. To date, €94 million has been committed, with another round of future funding to come. “To date, we have received more than 4,800 applications, with 461 successful projects from 29 countries, for a total amount of €94m in funding.”- Ludovic Blecher.
- Battling misinformation: projects to defend and protect quality journalism by using fact-checking and other technologies.
- Telling local stories ensures that even the smaller and local publishers get a shout-out in the digital space.
- Exploring new technologies: to automate work streams or content via digital technology to support original journalism and improve the reader experience.
- Boosting digital revenues: helping publishers with better opportunities to turn their content into revenue.
This year Google took a collaborative approach with publishers stretching across the national lines, sharing knowledge to create bespoke projects or using open source coding. The DNI-funded projects are funding opportunities from startups to large newsrooms, thus evolving and reinventing everything.
