Valve recently discovered a Dota 2 loophole that was being leveraged by players who were using third-party hacking tools. In response, they created a patch that fixed the loophole and permanently banned nearly 40,000 Dota 2 players who were exploiting it.

After CS: GO in popularity, Dota 2 is the second most played game on Steam, thus Valve must constantly keep an eye out for hackers to maintain a fair gameplay environment. Despite the development of effective anti-cheat systems, the game still attracts a sizable number of cheats.

Dota 2 players were banned for cheating

Dota 2 published a dedicated article on their website titled “Cheaters Will Never Be Welcome In Dota.” Valve reported that they had permanently banned more than 40,000 Dota 2 players as part of their continuing campaign against hackers and cheats.

The developers claim that the hackers were granted an unfair advantage since this third-party software had access to private data stored within the Dota client. The players were found cheating through a trap set up by Valve.

When the Dota 2 developer identified how the hack functioned, they corrected the issue but also introduced the honeypot, which is, according to the developer, a set of data that normal players are unlikely to encounter but that the cheating client would see. This made it simple for Valve to find the hackers who have now banned more than 40,000 Dota 2 players.

Lastly, Valve stated that they will continue to take action against the hackers, “We expect that some players will continue to develop and use new exploits, to continue to try to gain unfair advantages at the expense of other players. As before, we will continue to detect and remove these exploits as they come, and continue to ban users who cheat.”

For the Dota 2 players who enjoy the normal gameplay will be happy with this news of hackers ban. It will now make gamers think twice before installing any cheat if they do not want to lose their account.
