Facebook has announced a new mobile payment system Facebook Pay with which it seeks to facilitate the transfer of money and purchase of products from its applications.
Facebook has made official its intention to offer mobile payments or money transfers in its applications through Facebook Pay. The company announced its payment system that will allow you to send money, make donations and, in the future, buy goods and services directly from mobile applications.
While payments on the social network are not new, Facebook Pay will facilitate the process and seek to homogenize it among mobile applications, such as Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook itself.
Users can register a credit card or PayPal account directly from the application settings menu. Then you can choose if you want to use this payment method in all apps or do it individually.
People can send money to their friends or family, buy directly from pages or businesses in the Facebook Marketplace, tickets for special events, make micropayments within games or donations to an organization.
Facebook Pay will initially be available for Facebook and Messenger apps, although there are plans to implement it in the future on WhatsApp and Instagram. As with other services of the company, the initial stage only includes the United States and it has not been revealed when it will reach other regions.
In terms of privacy and security, the company says that Facebook Pay securely stores and encrypts the card and bank account numbers. People can use the mobile device’s facial or fingerprint recognition options as an additional protection measure, or add a PIN.
According to Facebook, its new payment system is based on the current infrastructure and is independent of the Calibra wallet, announced a few months ago alongside the Libra cryptocurrency.
The payment system arrival to WhatsApp and Instagram will happen later, according to Deborah Liu, vice president of market and commerce of Facebook. “Over time, we plan to take Facebook Pay to more people and places, even for use on Instagram and WhatsApp.” In the beginning, it will be available on Facebook or Messenger apps and support most debit and credit cards in addition to PayPal.
