As part of its commitment to ensuring the expansion of fiber-based connectivity nearly everywhere in the world, the Finnish telecommunications company Nokia is pleased to announce today that it has been selected by Austrian utility and infrastructure company Energie AG Oberösterreich to build an optical transport network across 18 sites in Upper Austria.
According to the Finnish tech giants in a press release today, the new high-speed Nokia optical transport network will backhaul traffic from FTTH regional nodes to two central sites in Upper Austria, and its deployment is currently underway.
Austria’s Energie AG
Energie AG Oberösterreich is a regional energy supply and infrastructure company. Through its holdings and subsidiaries, the firm is involved in the waste management and water sectors in addition to the energy sectors of electricity, natural gas, and heat. Energy AG Telekom GmbH, an Energie AG subsidiary, manages a fiber optic network with a total length of more than 7,000 kilometers.’
Nokia optical transport network
The Nokia optical transport network can currently handle aggregated traffic generated by Energie AG’s fiber optic access network up to 6.4 Terabits per second. With the ability to scale to 10s of Tbs, the new transport network has plenty of room to accommodate Energie AG’s expanding client base and demand.
The upgrade will make use of a wide range of optical networking gear and software from Nokia. This includes the Nokia Network Services Platform (NSP) software automation package and the Nokia 1830 PSS (Photonic Service Switch) platform, all of which are powered by the company’s Photonic Service Engine (PSE) coherent technology.

Speaking on the development, Patrick Langelaan, the Vice president of Nokia Enterprise CBT Europe South, said in the last few years, the company has been abundantly evident that the expansion of fiber-based connectivity nearly everywhere is a crucial economic determinant for any nation.
“It has become very clear over the past two years that the scaling of fibre-based connectivity virtually everywhere is a key economic factor for any country. Local and regional communications service providers can play an important role in providing this ultra-fast connectivity. We are excited to support Energie AG on its journey to connect Upper Austria with high-speed fibre access.”
On the other hand, Werner Steinecker, the CEO of Energie AG Oberösterreich, pointed out that by investing in a 7000 km optical transport network across Upper Austria, the firm intends to significantly enhance the high-speed fiber access experience for its clients.

The Nokia fibre optics solution is proven worldwide and technically solid, and will allow us to grow even further by scaling to our needs as we continue to broaden our customer base.”
