In a bid to broaden its technology industry, the American tech giant, Google, has revealed today that it plans to invest about 4.9 billion yuan in Japan for the next 4 years and is also set to open the first Google data center in the country in the coming year. Google CEO Sundar Pichai disclosed this today in an interview with Nikkei.

According to him, some of the 4.9 billion yen is used to build Google’s first data center and submarine cable in Japan, aiming to ensure faster and more stable access to Google services.

Google Japan Partnership

Over the years, Google’s partnership in Japan has become more profound than ever, and it is not surprising that the new Google Pixel 7 and Pixel Watch launch event was held in Tokyo. The duo devices were launched yesterday in the country.

In 2019, Sundar Pichai visited the country to inaugurate a Google Campus for Startups incubator, and today is there to meet with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and discuss Google’s investment ambitions in more detail.

Google Data Center

Sundar Pichai explained that opening the first Google Japanese data center is part of its commitment to invest in the world’s third-biggest economy. The new center is part of Google’s US $730 million infrastructure project that started last year and will last through 2024.

According to him, the center will give people in Japan faster, more reliable access to Google’s tools and services, support economic activity and jobs, and connect Japan to the rest of the global digital economy.

“We look forward to helping more people in Japan benefit from the opportunities technology brings, over the decade ahead and beyond,” said Pichai.

The facility is located in Inzai City, Chiba, and will assist economic growth and job creation while accelerating the operation of Google’s tools and services. The Chiba data center will help the company’s attempts to link Japan with the rest of the world’s economy. It will be its third facility in Asia after Taiwan and Singapore. Additionally, Google is in charge of building the Topaz underwater cable connecting Canada and Japan.
