Intel, in partnership with VCX-Forum, has announced the launching of the first consensus-driven camera benchmark specifically targeted for videoconferencing image quality named VCX-WebCam 2023. Cross-PC ecosystem group raises PC image quality standards for videoconferencing with new VCX-Webcam metric.

The VCX-WebCam 2023

To assess camera performance, VCX-WebCam 2023 simulates the harsh circumstances in which video conferencing technology is typically utilized. Modern assessment techniques that function similarly to contemporary image processing algorithms serve as the foundation for tests. Tests are concentrated on frequent pain areas raised by consumers and industry experts during the development process and basic image quality issues.

The VCX score thoroughly evaluates camera imaging performance with a focus on face-present and face-moving situations, auto-exposure, white balance, noise, and spatial frequency performance. High levels of image quality are indicated by a high VCX score.

Speaking on the new VCX-Webcam metric, Josh Newman, the vice president and general manager of Mobile Innovation at Intel, said it is a key priority to give all Intel Evo laptops an excellent video conferencing experience.

“Providing a superior videoconferencing experience on all Intel Evo laptops has been a top priority. With the new VCX metric, we’re excited to bring a new quantitative measurement of the camera quality on future Intel Evo designs and strive for better PC experiences as a collective industry,”

VCX-WebCam 2023 Built on Transparency Mind

The webcam standards division of the VCX forum created VCX-WebCam 2023 with transparency in mind. This group, led by Anthony from Intel, utilized the expertise and knowledge of top OEMs, test labs, ISP providers, and hardware and software vendors from across the PC ecosystem to build a specification that is both robust and transparent. They received significant contributions from Dell, Image Engineering, Lenovo, HP, AMD, PAL labs, Microsoft, and many others.

While reflecting the typical subjective experience of the end user, the results are objective to avoid bias from human testers. The use of VCX-WebCam 2023 sets the way for the delivery of trustworthy, realistic results that reflect how actual users evaluate the performance and image quality of webcams.

VCX-WebCam 2023 to Dramatic Improve Webcam Performance

In all, Tony Orchard, VCX WebCam standard department chair and Senior Imaging Engineer at Intel, said he believes the VCX-WebCam 2023 will drive dramatic improvements in webcam performance over the next few years, making video conferencing better for everyone.

“Utilizing broad industry experience from some of the most well-known companies in the PC ecosystem, we have modernized the way webcams are tested and built an objective score system that is correlated to user experience. I believe VCX-WebCam 2023 will drive dramatic improvements in webcam performance over the next few years, making video conferencing better for everyone.”
