Samsung’s OLED Panels to Grow Fast as Apple Plans to Release First MacBook With OLED Display in 2024

In his latest survey, the China-funded TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo pointed out that Apple plans to release a MacBook with an OLED display before the end of 2024, while Samsung’s OLED panels for notebooks will significantly increase its shipment in 2023, with a target of about 70 percent.

The TF securities analyst disclosed this today via his official Twitter page. According to him, he believes that Apple plans to release a MacBook with an OLED display before the end of 2024, suggesting that the change could allow for more diverse form factor designs. In his words:

“Ming-Chi Kuo said that Samsung Display (SDC) plans to significantly increase the shipment of OLED panels for notebooks in 2023, with a target of 70% annual growth and shipments of 6-7 million units. Since CEC is the exclusive supplier of SDC for glass cutting, polarizer bonding and IC wire bonding, it is the main beneficiary of the significant growth in shipments.

Compared with Mini-LED, notebook computers using OLED have the advantages of thinness and diverse designs (such as folding), so Apple will also launch an OLED MacBook before the end of 2024 at the earliest. It is expected that driven by Apple, the growth rate of OLED notebooks is expected to maintain a high growth rate in the next few years.”

However, it should be noted that all existing MacBooks have LCD panels, with the latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro featuring mini-LED backlighting and ProMotion. OLED displays, in contrast to LCDs with mini-LEDs, feature self-emitting pixels and do not require illumination, giving MacBooks an even higher contrast ratio and enabling longer battery life.

Whether the OLED MacBook would be a Pro or Air variant was not made clear by Ming-Chi Kuo. Ross Young, a display industry researcher, claimed last month that Apple would release a new 13-inch MacBook Air with an OLED panel in 2024. Additionally, he anticipates that Apple will introduce new 11.1-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models with OLED panels in 2019.

OLED panels seem destined for Macs and iPads over the coming years, but the Apple Watch may start to abandon the technology. According to today’s story from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a new Apple Watch Ultra with a microLED display may be available by the end of 2024. In comparison to current Apple Watch models with OLED displays, microLED technology would offer even greater brightness and a better contrast ratio. Thus, stay connected with TechGenyz.
