A post on X has been made by Open AI about ChatGPT’s voice feature which has been named “ Advanced Voice Mode,” and is currently available for all premium ChatGPT users. Open AI’s CEO Sam Altman has stated that he hopes it was worth the wait on X.
Advanced Voice uses GPT-4o ‘s integral audio capabilities and features that enforce authentic real-time conversations that have been equipped to pick up non-verbal cues like speaking rate and respond with appropriate emotion to make it appear more realistic.
Even though this voice feature was supposed to roll out in May of this year, the release was postponed when Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson made an allegation that the demo voice called Sky was very similar to her own voice from the 2013 film, “Her.”
Open AI had responded by reassuring that they did not base the voice after Johansson but could not go forward with the release after her legal counsel sent letters stating they didn’t have permission to release a voice that sounded to similar to the actress.
In lieu of the recent release. ChatGPT is also supposed to get five new voices that users can test and are named Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce, and Vale respectively. In order to get access to this feature one has to be a Plus or Team user. Since it is a new feature, several limitations have also been set in relation to the number of advanced voices Plus and Team users can use daily.
Once a user reaches the limit, a notification will be displayed accordingly. The premium users will also be notified when they have 15 minutes of advanced voice remaining for the day. This therefore comes off as an essential release. Ultimately we can hope that this feature reaches to the regular consumers of ChatGPT gradually!
