WhatsApp is testing a new feature for its iOS users which shall include securing chats with fingerprint or Face ID, much unto the way users currently unlock their phones.
WeBetainfo reports that WhatsApp is currently using Apple’s TestFlight beta program to test out this security-heavy feature, with the latest 2.19.20.13 beta update introducing it. The function is expected to be officially rolled out with the next 2.19.20 update version.
To enable the new method of authentication, one needs to open Privacy Settings on WhatsApp to access ‘Screen Lock.’ Users of devices like the iPhone X and above can enable authentication with Face ID, while those below the same can enable Touch ID for WhatsApp. Once the setting has been updated, users can avail Face or Touch ID to access WhatsApp chats. The Notification panel can still be used to reply to messages and answer calls, despite WhatsApp itself being locked. Users can also enable time intervals for activating authentication, ranging between one minute and one hour, and if users fail to authenticate using Face or Touch ID, they can enter a passcode, similar to unlocking the screen lock. Moreover, the data used for authentication will not be saved on WhatsApp servers, making its usage private.
While the addition of this new authentication system seems to be a surety for iOS users, it can be expected that Android users will not be left far behind. Speculative rumors also suggest that WhatsApp may soon be ushering in a ‘Dark Mode’ for its users.
