Swiss engineering company ABB has announced the launch of the world’s fastest charging station for electric vehicles (EVs). With a spike in demand for electric cars made by Tesla, Hyundai, and other automakers, the launch of the charging station shows good timing.
The Terra360 – as the charging station will be called – is a modular charger. With the launch, ABB seems to be continuing with plans for its EV charging business. This could be worth around $3 billion.
ABB noted that using dynamic power distribution, the device can charge up to four vehicles at once and fully charge any electric car within 15 minutes. This makes the Terra360 an easy choice for customers worried about unduly long charging times.
Terra360: An answer to market demand
Speaking on the development, the President of ABB’s E-mobility Division, Frank Muehlon, stated that the demand for EV charging infrastructure was higher than ever. He attributed this to policies drafted to combat climate change.
He stated, “The demand for EV charging infrastructure, especially charging stations that are fast, convenient and easy to operate, is higher than ever.” It is thus the company’s target to plug right into that gap.
The maximum output power of the Terra360 is 360 kW. Reports suggest that Terra360 charging piles should be listed in Europe by the end of 2021 and in the Asia Pacific in 2022.
Improving on the Terra360 charging pile
GAC Aeon also unveiled its super-speed battery technology and A480 super-charge pile in a related development. The super-speed battery can achieve a peak voltage of 880V and a charging power of 480kW.
With the A480 supercharging pile, 6C high rate charging can be realized. This produces a greater range than the Terra 360. While the Terra360 can charge cars up to 100 km apart, the range of charging using the super-charge pile can be increased to 200 kilometers in just 5 minutes.
