Amazon has decided to take on two new projects for renewable energy plants. Amazon will construct the Amazon Wind Farm in the Republic of Ireland, and an Amazon Solar Farm in Virginia, U.S. This is not going to be the first renewable energy plant to be constructed by Amazon either in the U.S or outside of it.

In fact, the Wind Farm that is yet to be constructed in Ireland is the second wind farm in Cork, Ireland. Coming to the U.S, Virginia’s farm would be Amazon’s the seventh plant to be constructed.

The second Irish Amazon Wind Farm is expected to supply 23.2 megawatts (MW) of renewable capacity and generate 68,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of eco-friendly energy per year.

On the other hand, the American Amazon Solar Farm is expected to yield 45 megawatts (MW) of renewable capacity and produce 100,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of green energy every year.

Playing a significant role in helping to reduce the sources of human-induced climate change is an important commitment for Amazon. Major investments in renewable energy are a critical step to address our carbon footprint globally. We will continue to invest in these projects, and look forward to additional investments this year and beyond – Kara Hurst, Director of Sustainability, Amazon

Both the projects are expected to be fully functional next year. The energy that these farms will produce will be used to power Amazon Web Services data centers. The projects undertaken by Amazon has been lauded by a majority of the population.

Richard Bruton, Ireland’s Minister for Communications, Climate Action, and Environment, to have applauded the initiative taken by Amazon. He is looking forward to “continuing to work with AWS as we strive to make Ireland a leader in the renewable energy space.”

Virginia Senator Mark R. Warner said that it would not only produce a clean source of energy, Amazon would also help in creating new jobs in rural areas as well.
