Amazon has launched the Spotlight North East storefront, which means that this platform will now also showcase various local products to Amazon customers across the country. The northeast region offers a range of unique GI products. Using the new storefront, users can purchase products like Chakshesang shawls from Nagaland, Muga Silk from Assam, and different types of weaves like the Moirang Phee from Manipur, varieties of teas and spices like the Mizo Chilli, and much more.

The new Spotlight, North East program was first announced by Amazon at the Sambhav event, which was held in April this year. The idea behind this program was to boost local businesses, support small businesses, create job opportunities, and also to accelerate the financial inclusion and empowerment of women across the region. As per the official announcement by Amazon, its new initiative would benefit over 50,000 weavers, artisans, and small businesses by 2025 while also providing them with access to technology and markets.

The company mentioned, “The initiative will accelerate digitization in the region and provide an opportunity for local businesses to leverage eCommerce, helping North East India leapfrog into a robust economy and increasing its share in the country’s digital economy.”

Amazon has partnered up with North Eastern Handlooms and Handicrafts Development Corporation (NEHHDC). The new program started by Amazon will engage and employ the artisans and the weaver communities from the North-Eastern region, across 8 states. Moreover, Amazon has also mentioned that the North-Eastern artisans under this program will avail all the benefits of the Amazon Karigar program. Amazon is yet to publish details on the benefits provided under the Karigrar program.

Additionally, Amazon will also host training workshops to enable Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across the region. Apparently, leading designers from India will conduct workshops to support the artisans.
