Google has announced more tightened security with Android 12 which is currently available in developer preview. Google mentioned that the new version of the OS will bring with it a more straightforward approach to password restrictions.
“Instead of granular requirements that often result in easily forgotten passwords, we’re establishing pre-set complexity levels of high, medium, or low that will be used to access the device,” Google said in a statement. The tech-giant further mentioned, “The work security challenge enables an IT-approved password for access to data in the work profile, separate from a simplified password for the device.”
Google has improved the device setup process which will inform the employees if the passwords that they have provided do not meet the requirements set up by their admin. They can simply choose to increase the strength of their device password or they can also choose to set up a work security challenge to access apps in the work profile. If IT approves it, the users also have the option of switching back to one password for both work and personal usages. However, for company-owned devices, it will be the admins who will be able to choose between the option of setting up the new password complexity levels and using the more granular restrictions.
The Certificate management will allow enterprises to enable authentication for employee access to remote services. In Android 12, credential management will also be available to apps besides the device policy client.
As per Google, “With this expanded credential management, more companies can extend secure access to employees regardless of their location, a key requirement in the COVID-19 era.”
“Instead of relying on hardware identifiers such as IMEI or serial numbers, personal devices will get a new identifier derived programmatically during enrollment,” Google said in a statement on Thursday.
