The majority of Android smartphones have already implemented the new in-screen fingerprint scanners, and now Samsung has introduced the world’s first device featuring an ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint scanners with improved accuracy. Whereas Apple’s iPhone is still waiting to abode the new generation of fingerprint sensors within the display.

According to new reports, Apple now intends to launch a new iPhone with a budget-friendly model for the Chinese market that will feature an under-display fingerprint sensor instead of expensive Face ID technology, Chinese media sources have claimed.

Apple was widely rumored to be attempting to integrate Touch ID under the display on 2017’s iPhone X. Still, the company deferred any form of fingerprint scanning after hitting “early line of sight” with Face ID. Chinese smartphone brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have since gone in the opposite direction and extended the adoption of in-display fingerprint sensing technology from their premium smartphones to mid-range models.

Apple’s Face ID tech has been the go-to biometrics solution when it first appeared on the iPhone X in 2017. Although it’s pretty accurate, the components that go into it, such as structured light laser emitter, are pretty expensive to procure. This adds to the cost of the already expensive iPhones and makes them look unattractive from a value perspective when compared to handsets from local OEMs such as Xiaomi, Huawei, and OPPO, which offer flagship-level features at $731 on average. The injection of an in-display fingerprint iPhone might bring the cost down, and attract such customers to the Apple brand.

Earlier Apple was in talks with Qualcomm to introduce an in-screen fingerprint sensor on the new iPhone, reports industry chain. But currently, Apple is rumored to adopt in-display fingerprint scanner technology in demand for better viewing experience. Thus it is leading to thinner bezels and in-screen fingerprint sensors. Despite the market shift to fingerprint sensing tech, many observers believe Apple is done with Touch ID in smartphones. However, the company has explored various in-display fingerprint scanner solutions in the past, including fingerprint sensing MicroLED displays.
