Apple is yet to announce its foldable phone development officially, and the tech giant hasn’t yet introduced a foldable phone.
Today, the company has reportedly kickstarted the development of an OLED panel that wouldn’t be built with a polarizer, allowing them to produce thinner displays. This isn’t the first time a company has produced an OLED without a polarizer. Samsung has already done the same thing in the production of to produce OLED panels in the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Samsung unveiled its first-ever foldable smartphones in 2019 and 2020, the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Flip Z, paving the way for the Foldable phones series. Following the deployment of Samsung, several other mobile makers have continued to launch the foldable phone by picking up the baton. Samsung screen printed a color filter on the thin film encapsulation and then added a thin black pixel to define a layer in the place of polarizer film.
This redefined the process of the display to offer lucid colors through the color filter. Perhaps, Apple has taken a step further to launch a foldable phone under its brand. However, the speculations have been surfacing since 2016. The black pixel double defines a sturdy layer that replaces the traditionally used orange pixel-defined layer made out of photosensitive polyimide.
Using an orange Pixel in the display would greatly impact affecting the contrast ratio. But this endanger is plucked out from the gardens. A quite different polyimide material was used for the black pixel-defining layer. The Elec reported that “Samsung Display is calling its CF on TFE technology ECO2, or Eco Square. The company suggests that this innovative technology can improve light transmittance by 33% and lower power consumption by 25%.
Apple has several foldable device patents on its shelves, covering all the available foldable concepts from scrap to snippet but it is still unknown at this time if Apple is considering a foldable iPhone or iPad. Apple would never introduce a product in a short period, unlike other manufacturers who constantly launch new products on a monthly basis. Considering the fact we must wait for some time to witness the foldable phones from Apple.
