A U.S.-based commercial space company will send 1 BTC inside a hardware wallet to the Moon sometime later this year. The concerned company called, Astrobotic Technology, is based in Pittsburgh and is also a contractor of NASA with its Commercial Lunar Payload Services. The flight carrying the bitcoin is called the Peregrine lander, which will land on the surface of the Moon in the fourth quarter of 2021. The Bitcoin 2021 Conference in Miami, Florida, announced the carrying of bitcoin to the Moon. Peregrine-1’s payload will include a single bitcoin as a result of a deal between Astrobotic and the crypto exchange BitMEX.

Astrobotic’s moon mission has been in the making for several years now, and its mission will carry more than a dozen commercial flights and 12 NASA payloads to the moon’s surface.

An official statement of the initiative contends, “The coin will be a registered payload on the Peregrine-1 manifest, and will remain in situ on the Moon’s surface until any enterprising soul goes to collect it. It will have a public vanity address allowing anyone interested to witness its redemption or add some Sats if you’re feeling generous.”

Astrobotic CEO John Thornton said during the Livestream, “Yes, literally bitcoin is going to the moon… We’re incredibly excited to be flying this payload to the surface and can’t wait for the mission coming up very, very soon.”

After Astrobotic’s flight carries the bitcoin to the moon, it will remain there until someone lands on the moon and collects it. Interestingly, earlier in May this year, SpaceX announced that the company will launch the “DOGE-1 Mission to the Moon” early next year when the company’s CEO Elon Musk had accepted the cryptocurrency as a payment system.

The Moon mission is supposed to take place in November 2021.
