Thanos, the mad Titan, and his Black Order was introduced to Marvels fans in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ when he entered into conflict with the Avengers in his quest for the six Infinity Stones. But what has left the fans stumped is Thanos’ capacity for benevolence as he leaves the Avengers be once he has accomplished the task at hand, namely finding the Stones.

Be it on Titan or in Wakanda, once he has secured the Stone, Thanos teleports away without attempting to kill his foes. Speaking of Thanos’ apparent benevolence, in spite of wielding the Infinity Stones.

The plan of getting all the Infinity Stones is putting [Thanos] in the position of being so powerful that he is sort of calmer, more single-minded, and more reasonable. He is not necessarily worried about killing the heroes. As long as he ends up with the stones, he can accomplish what he wants to. – Ryan Meinerding, Head of Visual Development Marvel Studio

This reasoning does justify somewhat the motives of the Titan, who is not looking for petty vengeance; but is concerned with accomplishing the mightier task of attempting to restore balance in the Universe.

Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige, speaks at length about Thanos’ importance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he addresses the challenge of building up this mighty villain over the course of multiple films. In ‘Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years, Thanos has been lurking in the shadows with a desire to obtain these Infinity Stones, which has played a big part in other films.

“We’ve introduced the Tesseract, revealed to be the Space Stone; the Mind Stone, which came out of Loki’s scepter and then went into Vision’s forehead; and the Time Stone: the Eye of Agamotto that Doctor Strange wears is an Infinity Stone itself! And of course, the Guardians dealt with the Power Stone. So these storytelling devices that we’ve seeded into every film will continue to play a part and come together.”

Thanos’ uniqueness in the MCU is owing to the fact that he hasn’t been wronged or betrayed, and he is not driven by rage. It now remains to be seen if his dedication to the cause comes back to haunt him when ‘Avengers: 4’ premiers in the theatres on May 03, 2019.
