The creator of Spellbreak, Proletariat, published a blog post yesterday outlining the future of the game.  The post mentioned that the game’s development is currently halted, and all of its servers will be shut down in 2023. Today, the news came out that the developer of popular video games like Overwatch and Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment, is purchasing Proletariat and leveraging its workforce of about 100 people to boost its World of Warcraft firm.

According to the reports, the firm began exploring alternatives outside of expanding its internal studio around the end of last year. Proletariat, a well-known gaming company, was on the shortlist when it looked for outside partners. The firm began exploring alternatives outside of expanding its internal studio around the end of last year.

Spellbreak is a free-to-play first-person shooter battle royale game with a magical concept from Proletariat. Fans were disappointed by the announcement, but many also started to speculate what the studio would do next.

Since Proletariat and Blizzard have been interacting for a short while, it’s possible that a positive working environment fostered the acquisition talk in this case. The timing of the acquisition is noteworthy given that Proletariat just recently announced that they will be ending development on Spellbreak and shutting down the game’s servers.

The entry of the proletariat coincides with the company’s impending takeover by Microsoft, which is anticipated to conclude later next year.  In a statement, Proletariat stated, “We are grateful to everyone in the game’s community for experiencing the fantastical settings and experiences that we co-created. Our team pushed new limits in design and development with the enormous Spellbreak project, and we can’t wait to keep innovating as we make more games in the future.”

For World of Warcraft, the objective is to increase the workforce in order to meet expansion performance and timeline targets. However, there was no disclosure of the contract’s terms. Just several years ago, Vicarious Visions, a private Activision company, was incorporated into Blizzard to assist with the Diablo franchise, despite this being done long after Activision and Blizzard combined.
