Facebook has taken one further step in societal welfare through introducing blood donation plan in India. Today, Facebook announced that it will soon launch tools for connecting blood donors with people and organizations in need. This will continue the social media company’s process in working with the civil society members in India.

Hema Budaraju, the Facebook project manager, said that this is the next step in their social work in the country. She hopes that their blood donation plan becomes useful to the countrymen. In a blog, Ritesh Mehta, head of South Asia programs, was quoted saying, “The person who needs blood won’t be able to see any information about the donor unless the donor explicitly provides it when he/she reaches out to the person in need of blood.”

A First Time…

This is the first time for Facebook in making tools for facilitating connections between blood banks and users. A source close to the matter confirmed the same. Facebook aims at addressing shortage through its attributes in India.

The Process

October 1 is the National Blood Donation Day for India. The upcoming day will see Facebook users start volunteering for becoming a blood donor on Facebook. In the following weeks, blood banks, hospitals, and individuals in need can send an alert through Facebook. The alert of the shortage would include further information, such as name, location, and requirement details. In the process, the nearby blood donors will receive a popped-up notification, regarding the alert, in their News Feed. They can respond to the request via Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or a phone call. Then, the donor information will be set to private. It will only remain visible to the donor. Although, the donor may share the status on her/his timeline, or with organizations and people in need. The initiative will start on mobile web and the phones running on Android.
