PC gamers wait with bated breath as Monster Hunter World sets for launch for PC next month, amongst rumors that the game struggles to run at 60 FPS despite with a GTX 1080. However, Capcom has come forward to clarify that the game is CPU intensive and not GPU.

The reason they stated for this is that the game’s entire level is loaded in order to avoid loading during gameplay. Besides, the game also keeps track of monster interactions, health status and more, in real time. This requires CPU cycles, and therefore, it is CPU intensive.

To eliminate interstitial loading during active gameplay, MHW loads the entire level into memory. In addition to managing assets loaded into memory, it keeps track of monster interactions, health status, environment/object changes, manages LOD & object culling, calculates collision detection and physics simulation, and tons of other background telemetry stuff that you don’t see yet requires CPU cycle. This is in addition to supporting any GPU rendering tasks.

This explains why the game might struggle to run at 60 FPS even with a GTX 1080, which is because the CPU would be used to keep track of monster and other functions. With so much happening together, the CPU would lose its capacity to utilize GTX 1080 properly, and as a result, the FPS drops.

Developed by Capcom for Xbox One and PS4, Monster Hunter World is an open-world action adventure game, which will be launched for PC on August 9.

To play the game, you need the following system requirements:

  • MINIMUM: A 64-bit processor and operating system required.
  • OS: WINDOWS® 7, 8, 8.1, 10 (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-4460, 3.20GHz or AMD FX™-6300
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 760 or AMD Radeon™ R7 260x(VRAM 2GB)
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 20 GB available space
  • Sound Card: DirectSound(DirectX® 9.0c)
  • Additionally: 1080p/30fps when graphics settings set to “Low”

RECOMMENDED: A 64-bit processor and operating system required.

  • OS: WINDOWS® 7, 8, 8.1, 10 (64-bit required)
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i7 3770 3.4GHz or Intel® Core™ i3 8350 4GHz or AMD Ryzen™ 5 1500X
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060(VRAM 3GB) or AMD Radeon™ RX 570X(VRAM 4GB)
  • DirectX: Version 11

  • Additionally: 1080p/30fps when graphics settings set to “High”

A recent example of CPU intensive video games is Assassin’s Creed Origins, for high CPU utilization, but it does not reach 60 FPS. But we expect Capcom to distribute a patch to make things run smoother.
