As far back as 2016, China successfully launched the world’s first quantum science experimental satellite Mozi with the Long March 2D carrier rocket at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. Then, the Chinese quantum satellite dispatched transmissions over a distance of 1,200 km (746 miles), a breakthrough in technology that could be used to deliver secure messages.

Since then, the country had been working on launching new quantum satellite communications to compete with the likes of the United States and Russia in space technology. Earlier this year, Pan Jianwei of China’s University of Science and Technology and colleagues Peng Chengzhi, Chen Yuao, Yin Juan, and others made significant experimental progress in long-distance quantum state transmission using the Mozi quantum science experimental satellite.

However, today, the country is pleased to announce that it has successfully launched the second quantum communication satellite after six years named “Lijian-1.” The second quantum communication satellite was successfully dispatched to China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center to test a new space technology carrier rocket.

The atmospheric density detection test satellite, the low-orbit quantum key distribution test satellite, the electromagnetic assembly test double satellite, and the Nanyue Science Satellite were all successfully launched. The “Lijian-1” launch vehicle is the largest solid launch vehicle in the country and was developed independently by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

According to China Telecom Quantum, the low-orbit quantum key distribution test satellite – Jinan No. 1 – is one of six satellites launched this time by Lijian No. 1. This is the world’s first quantum micro-nano satellite, and China’s second quantum communication satellite.

Therefore, the new development illustrates China’s commitment to meeting and competing with the world’s space technology – the United States and Russia, by prioritizing advancing its space sector. Thus, stay connected with TechGenyz as we bring you the latest updates in the Tech world.
