Activision stated in a new blog post that Modern Warfare 2 and newly created Call of Duty: Modern Warfare accounts will necessarily demand a mobile number. It was necessary so that it could call your number and notify you when significant alterations are done to the player’s account.
This feature is intended to stop smurfing and other sorts of cheating, but it also restricts players worldwide from accessing the game. However, Activision assures users that the game won’t utilize the SMS authentication data for promotional purposes and will only employ the mobile number for security purposes.
According to the studio, a mobile phone number must be associated with the user’s Steam account in order to access Modern Warfare 2 on Steam. What’s most concerning is that gamers who use pre-paid mobile numbers were just not included by Battle.net’s most recent policy and may not be able to access the game. Only those with the means to pay for a monthly phone subscription can enjoy games.
The blog mainly referenced Modern Warfare 2019, Modern Warfare 2, and the freshly launched Overwatch 2. Despite not being mentioned, both of Activision’s battle royale shooters—Warzone and the upcoming Warzone 2.0—require a Battle.net account to play.
