Samsung has unveiled the Exynos W920, a new wearable CPU. According to the company, this will be the first smartwatch SoC created on the 5nm technology, significantly improving the performance and capabilities of wearable devices.

The Mali-G68 GPU and two Cortex-A55 CPUs in the Exynos W920 are designed to deliver great performance while remaining power efficient. According to the South Korean tech giant, this new chipset has 20% more CPU performance and ten times better graphics than its predecessor.

To put the power of the Exynos W920 into perspective, Qualcomm’s current top-of-the-line chip, the Snapdragon 888, has four Cortex-A55 cores for low-power workloads.

The Vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics, Harry Cho, maintained that with the Exynos W920, future wearables will be able to run applications with visually beautiful users.

In his wordings: “With the Exynos W920, future wearables will be able to run applications with visually beautiful user interfaces and more responsive user experiences while keeping you connected on the go with fast LTE”.

Samsung has integrated a Cortex-M55 processor that is specifically built to handle everything linked to the always-on display for an even better power economy. None of the other components will have to turn on and power the entire screen for each fast view, thanks to this dedicated CPU.

A 4G LTE modem and a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) will be included in the SoC to aid in tracking speed, calculated distance, and elevation while outside.

Samsung has also indicated that the Exynos W920 would power Samsung’s new wearable OS, which was developed in collaboration with Google and will most likely debut in the forthcoming Galaxy Watch model. The model in question is likely to be the Galaxy Watch 4, which will be unveiled tomorrow, Wednesday 11th August 2021.
