Social media giant, Facebook has quietly rolled out a meme-making app ‘Whale’ on the Canadian App Store that may come to other markets later. Facebook has created the app by secretive “experimental” app division.

The app bills itself as an easy way to overlay special effects over text and photos. According to App Store screenshots, users can then quickly share the memes they make on Facebook’s other apps, like Instagram and Messenger.

At the moment, it is only available in Canada and in the App Store, as a test. It has been developed by the experimentation team with new Facebook products, the so-called NPE (New Product Experimentation, in English), which we reported a few months ago, and whose function is to test new trends and applications that could later see the light or not in general.

Its operation is simple. It allows you to edit the photographs or images in the mobile phone’s library or use your own predefined image library in the application itself. It incorporates numerous filters and stickers that help the realization of memes, which can then be easily shared from Whale in other social applications such as Instagram or Facebook Messenger.

The free-to-use app doesn’t have any hidden subscription pricing and allows users to use a wide variety of editing tools for creating an entertaining memes.

To use the app

  1. Users can snap a real-time photo, choose from their camera roll, or browse through the library of stock images.
  2. Add creative text, emojis, and other effects to make the meme more contextual and humorous.
  3. It can then be saved and shared on social media or message threads.

It is not known if Whale will finally be launched in other markets or not, lately, Facebook has developed similar applications, to identify user trends, which have not been officially launched and after testing has closed.
