The South Korean multinational electronics company, LG Innotek, has agreed to start supplying its 3D time of flight (ToF) module to the American multinational technology company Apple for their upcoming virtual reality (VR) headsets.

Recall that the American multinational technology company had earlier claimed that it would unveil its new virtual reality (VR) headsets by 2022.

The modules are required for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications. The time of flight modules fire lasers at an item and measure the time it takes for the light to bounce back to determine the distance between them.

LG Innotek provided ToF modules for the iPad Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max versions, which were released last year. It also provides modules for the iPhone 13 series, with the lidar function supporting AR in a 5G context.

The modules for Facebook’s VR headset Oculus were previously supplied by the South Korean component manufacturer.

However, according to the Elec speculations, LG Innotek will also be supplying its modules for upcoming Apple’s AR glass.

“It’s quite likely that LG Innotek will also be delivering its modules for Apple’s AR glass, which is anticipated to appear in 2023.”

The report claims that Apple has negotiated an exclusive agreement with Sony to obtain image sensors that can be utilized for the direct time of flight modules.
