Google has introduced a new series of “Go” apps that are designed exclusively for lighter and low-power devices. With the likes of Maps Go, YouTube Go, and several more already revealed, we have seen that this latest initiative has its merits. The latest inclusion in this series is the Gboard Go. It can be downloaded and installed on any device with low RAM, but the device must run on Android 8.1.
Gboard Go lite doesn’t look or work much differently compared to the full Gboard. The Google keyboard gets installed as an add-on on top of the standard version of the standard app. Various themes, gesture typing, and integrated search make it look impressive, though the users will be missing the GIF search and stickers features. Google has excluded the one-handed mode as well in Gboard Go.
The sole reason users would install the Gboard Go app is to save their RAM consumption. Compared to the 70 MB RAM usage of the regular version, this version uses 40MB of RAM.
The uploader has confirmed that this v6.9.4 will be shown to be available only on devices that reportedly have low amounts of RAM. It is named the “lite release”. Since Android 8.1 is an absolute must for this version to run, we can say that it is designed mainly for the Pixel or Nexus devices. Once this version is installed, it’s a bit complicated to revert to the stock version. The updates have to be uninstalled from the Play Store listings.
