Google today officially confirmed the discontinuation of Chromecast Audio, a product visually resembling the regular Chromecast video product, with features of a 3.5mm audio jack and cable instead of an HDMI cable. Chromecast Audio supports lossless audio with the capacity of streaming music from the device to a connected speaker over WiFi.
Even though Google recently reduced its price to $15 from its original price of $35, the device is now listed as “Out of Stock” and is no longer available to purchase through Google’s online store.
According to a Reddit post dated sometime earlier this January, Google Support had unofficially confirmed plans to discontinue Chromecast Audio. The Reddit user had reportedly ordered a Chromecast Audio for Christmas, but it had been canceled by Google, who cited the discontinuation of the product as the reason.
Google has confirmed to Android Police that it stopped manufacturing Chromecast Audio. However, it plans to continue offering device support for existing customers. A Google spokesperson stated, “Our product portfolio continues to evolve, and now we have a variety of products for users to enjoy audio.”
The manufacture of Chromecast Audio has ceased, and Google has sold out of its stock. Thus, customers will no longer be able to get the Chromecast Audio through Google itself. Online retailer B&H Photo has now described the product as discontinued, but there are some who continue to sell the remaining stock. Once the remaining stock gets depleted, only used units will remain.
Instead, the regular Chromecast dongle can be used to cast music content. The only disadvantage of this is that it will be played through whatever device the HDMI is connected to. If the HDMI is connected to the TV, it can be connected to a proper sound system to get a better audible experience.
