Google has been taking initiatives to help people find quality news and for this, they introduced Google News Showcase in October. According to a Google News blog, this Showcase came as a part of their $1 billion investment in the news. Through this, Google aims to contribute to the overall sustainability of its news partners around the world.
What’s new?
As a part of their new updates, News Showcase will soon start offering people access to paywalled content in partnership with select news publishers. Paywalls are an important part of some publishers’ revenue strategies.
Google wishes to support that goal and they will pay participating partners to provide limited access to paywalled content for News Showcase users. Also in return, the users will register with the news publisher. This way, the publishers will be able to build a relationship with readers.
As Alex says, the updated News Showcase panel includes a list of important articles selected daily by the user’s favorite publishers. Relevant publications, both national and local, will also now be shown within the For You feed. In addition to these, there will also be a dedicated area to discover new News Showcase publications within Newsstand on Google News.
Apart from Android, Google News Showcase will now also be available on iOS and will soon be coming to news.google.com and Discover. Moreover, it will also appear in Search Console so that the publishers could have more data to understand better which articles and topics users are responding to.
