The global powerhouse Google has joined forces with journalists and publishers to cultivate an environment fostering effective dialogue across Europe. As 2023 gained momentum, it showed no signs of slowing down, propelling an unprecedented transformation.
The Central and Eastern European media landscape, witnessed a profound metamorphosis as publishers and intrepid journalists harnessed technology for growth and deciphered the complexities of a rapidly transforming world.
1. Publishers Prioritize Training and Innovation
In a collaborative effort with Poland’s Press Publishers Chamber, Google, the search engine giant, orchestrated a two-day Google News Initiative (GNI) business training for 48 small and medium publishers. The primary focus was on audience development and reader revenue.
This initiative coincided with the launch of the Startups Lab for Eastern Europe, a comprehensive six-month program by GNI supporting 14 news startups in achieving subscriber growth and sustainable business models. The region also witnessed initiatives such as AI design sprint training and ongoing partnerships aimed at persistent skill development.
2. Journalists Embrace Technology to Combat Misinformation
Facing the ever-evolving challenges posed by misinformation, journalists in Central and Eastern Europe utilized technology to fact-check and verify news. Google’s research tool, Pinpoint, powered by Search and AI technologies, played a pivotal role in investigations by Baltic partners, including Lithuanian publishers 15min and Delfi Lithuania. Over 3,800 journalists received fact-checking and technical training, with a particular focus on election-related courses. Google has committed to supporting journalists in upcoming crucial elections and combating misinformation campaigns in Ukraine through collaboration with leading fact-checking organizations.
3. Building Bridges Through Local Gatherings
Acknowledging the complexity of the Central and Eastern European media landscape, Google organized six significant publisher days and gatherings across key cities. Events such as the “Battling Misinformation Online” gathering in Bratislava provided platforms for news leaders and media literacy experts to address mutual challenges. The announcement of a long-term partnership with Transitions aimed at increasing resilience to disinformation in Czechia and Slovakia is part of Google’s broader efforts to stimulate collaboration and address challenges unique to the region.
As Google maintains its commitment to the news sector, progress continues in compliance with the EU Copyright Directive, covering over 2,600 publications across 16 countries. Initiatives like the online contracting solution, initially launched in Central and Eastern Europe and now available in 14 European countries, further extend Google’s support to smaller, regional, and local publications.
In the ever-evolving media landscape of Central and Eastern Europe, Google’s initiatives underscore its dedication to fostering growth, innovation, and a resilient news ecosystem.
