Google decided to beat smartphone leakers at their own game by showing off the Pixel 4’s back and camera glimpses on its personal Twitter account. It’s a basic shot showing the back of the phone, but there’s a lot we can tell about it just by looking.

It confirms this will be the first Pixel with dual rear cameras and Google is significantly changing the Pixel’s design language, and it offers a handful of other details about what to expect from the phone.

The image shows a square camera bump at the back holding dual lenses, a first for Google. Leaks have already suggested that even Apple iPhone 11’s could come with a similar square-ish camera bump. It seems that Google has made a point in recent years of differentiating the Pixel by sticking with a single rear camera, yet still managing to pull off impressive tricks like portrait mode shots.

Was this a strategy for Google to reveal its design? Google’s strategy to reveal the design of its upcoming smartphone this early isn’t without a purpose though. Firstly, in this day and age, it is impossible to keep the phone designs secret, the fact that Apple, Samsung, and Google are entirely aware of. The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL were already on sale ahead of the launch. With the reveal on Twitter, Google wants to stay ahead of the game and control the narrative from the start.

Meanwhile, it’s also good to know that Google has seemingly decided to upgrade the optics in its next flagship phone. While the Pixel 3 featured undeniably outstanding image quality, many of Google’s biggest competitors are able to offer different photography perspectives through the use of multiple lenses.
