On a recent livestream hosted by Tesla and X-boss, Elon Musk, the official announcement was made on the launch of a new chatbot of xAI, Grok 3. On the live stream on the 18th of February, 2025, the brand new successor to the Grok 2 models was showcased, hosted by xAI engineers and the company owner himself. Boasting it to be the “Smartest AI on Earth”, the Gork 3 model contains several large language models (LLMs), each with various parameters and reasoning-based variants.
Grok 3 models launched by xAI
On the live stream that Musk had hosted, the capabilities of the new Grok 3 models were put on full display. The billionaire leader went on to say that xAI had built its new data centers to pre-train the language models, and the first 100,000 GPUs were running within 122 days; and were further doubled in the next 92 days.
Although Grok 3 consists of many LLMs, not all of them are currently available. The livestream unveiled Grok 3 and Grok 3 mini (a smaller albeit faster model), alongside the Grok 3 Reasoning and Grok 3 mini Reasoning models. The rollout of the announced AI models has thus begun, but other models are still currently undergoing the beta phase.
A major highlight of the model was its Chain-of-Thought (CoT) steps, which prevent any instances of distillation will being obscured. Distillation is the process when the synthetic data generated from one AI model is used to train other similar models.
The hosts also provided the benchmarks for Grok 3, claiming that Grok 3 outperforms GPT-4o on the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), Graduate-Level Google-Proof Q&A (GPQA), and LiveCodeBench benchmarks. They also claimed that Grok 3 achieved higher scores than Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Gemini-Pro, and DeepSeek-V3 on internal testing.
New features with Grok 3.
Two new features were also revealed with the Grok 3 models. Firstly, the new DeepSearch. This is xAI’s take on the Deep Research feature that was recently launched by OpenAI and Google. It performs, as the name suggests, a “deep search” of the internet and the X platform, analyzing information whenever a complex query is asked. It takes the information it has gathered and then generates a comprehensive report for the user.
The second feature, although not readily available at launch, is a new Voice Mode. This feature will allow the AI model to respond to queries verbally. Elon has stated that the feature will become available “as soon as a week from now.”
On a different note, Elon Musk has also announced the launch of an AI gaming studio at xAI. He said, “If you’re interested in joining us and developing AI-driven games, please come aboard. We’re announcing the launch tonight.”
Availability of the new Grok 3 models
Grok 3 has rolled out officially, with Premium Plus subscribers being the first to gain access to it. xAI has also announced Super Grok, a separate subscription that will provide more advanced capabilities and early access to newer features. Along with these announcements, a website has been launched for Grok at Grok.com. Users will also be able to access the AI through the Grok iOS app, and a similar app is also available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store.
Conclusively, Musk said that the company will be adopting an open-source policy for the last version of the AI model, once the current version is fully launched. Recently, the AI space was taken by storm by DeepSeek, and now another worthy contender has stepped up. No doubt that Grok 3 will be adopted throughout the sphere not only for its capabilities but also because it has a much more reliable source backing it up.
