August marks the end of online multiplayer for three games developed by Guerrilla Games. The servers of Killzone: Mercenary, Killzone Shadow Fall, and Rigs: Mechanized Combat League will all be taken down on August 12, announced officially.
On Friday, Guerrilla released a statement via their studio’s social media accounts outlining the intentions for the servers for these three titles. On August 12, all online game modes, notably multiplayer will be disabled; however, single-player offline modes will still be accessible. With its Horizon series, which most recently released Forbidden West for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Guerrilla has subsequently seen remarkable achievements.
“On August 12, 2022, online servers for Killzone: Mercenary, Killzone Shadow Fall (including Intercept Mode), and RIGS: Mechanized Combat League will be shut down,” Guerrilla states in the announcement Tweet. “On that date, all online functionality (including online multiplayer modes) will be discontinued. Offline single-player options are still available.” Although, the company provided no explanation for the unexpected decision to close servers for a set of its games.
Both Shadow Fall and Killzone Mercenary were released in 2013 for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, separately. Sony Interactive Entertainment shut down the Killzone franchise website last year. The PlayStation Store for the Vita system closed in July when Sony stopped making the device in 2019. RIGS, which came out in 2016 and has nothing to do with the Killzone series. The virtual reality game allows users to operate automated rigs in a variety of online matches, including team deathmatch and an American football simulation.
Final thoughts
Guerrilla might yet surprise PlayStation fans with a new Killzone game, but the chances don’t appear promising. Before their online modes are shut down next month, fans of the aforementioned games can enjoy the multiplayer modes. These closures serve as yet another indication that users shouldn’t assume that a game’s online features will be available forever.
