From one futuristic dystopian world to another, Killzone and Helldivers have a lot of similarities in themes and the overall idea of human struggle against alien adversaries. Thus, through a nod of acknowledgement from one game to another, Helldivers 2 had its first DLC scale crossover, adding content from the Killzone series.
Developer’s Long-Awaited Vision
The Killzone 2 crossover is something that the developers of Helldivers 2 had wanted to add to the game for a long time, as the statement they made in the Helldivers 2 Events goes:
According to the developers of Arrowhead Game Studios, the Killzone 2 crossover will be part of a new tier of premium content, which will be limited to crossovers from other games and “uniquely themed works”, offering players with more diverse tools and trinkets to play with.
Premium Content Tier
For now, the developers have made available five items. The most eye-catching of the five is the new armor set, the AC-1 Dutiful, an armor, which is inspired by the Helghast trooper and the StA-52 Assault Rifle, a primary weapon that brings the iconic firepower of Killzone to Helldivers. The rest of the three additional items are the “Strength In Our Arms” cape and banner along with the Assault Infantry player title.
This set is supposedly part of a rotating set and has given the players five days to acquire these exclusive items. The period is extended by the developers as a test to see if the longer periods of rotations are preferred by the community compared to its previous three-day per page period.
Community Concerns and Cost
While this DLC spices up the Helldivers 2 gameplay with new trinkets, the players are not wholly happy. The special premium content tier is quite an expensive ordeal to acquire, requiring players to spend a great amount of Super Credits. The limited availability and timeframe to obtain these items have agitated the fans with some calling it a “pay to win” mechanism.
Hopefully, we can expect these limited sets to return on a later date and be made available to other players who cannot dedicate much of their hard-earned credits to these new sets. While it comes to the question of calling it a “pay to win”, it is debatable as there is an opportunity for players to grab these goodies with their hard-earned cash and sacrifice.
