In a recently published Apple Support Document, the tech giant has made it clear that both the HomePod and the HomePod Mini will start supporting the playback option of the Apple Music Lossless Audio in an upcoming software update. However, at the time of the launch of both the devices, it will not support Apple Music Lossless right away; rather, it will come with support for Dolby Atmos for Apple Music.
Dolby Atmos, also known as Spatial Audio, creates an immersive three-dimensional experience that creates a music studio-like experience for the users. The newly introduced Apple Music Lossless Audio, on the other hand, provides higher quality audio.
Apple will start offering the Standard Apple Music Lossless Audio with up to 48kHz starting in June, along with the hi-res Lossless audio, which requires external equipment such as a USB digital-to-analog converter.
Although the future update will bring the Lossless Audio to both HomePod and the HomePod Mini, other devices such as the AirPods and AirPods Pro will not be offered the same service. In their defense, the same document explains that the current Bluetooth on the AirPod Max cannot support Lossless wirelessly. Still, the company has also pointed out that users are keen on getting the Lossless Audio on their AirPods can do so with the help of a cable that costs $550.
The Lightning to 3.5 mm Audio Cable could connect the AirPods Max to analog sources. Although the AirPods Max can be connected to devices that are playing Lossless recordings, the playback output of the AirPods will not be completely lossless.
Apple very recently announced the launch of Apple Music Lossless and Dolby Atmos; the Cali-based giant also mentioned that the new features will be available from June and that more than 20 million tracks will support the new feature.
