Amazon created it’s Echo line of devices to simulate a personal assistant that will cater to your commands and it has been doing a tremendous job so far. But if you are living with a family then it is not economical to buy an Echo device for each member of the family, but we still want that personalized experience right? To take care of that problem Amazon has introduced the concept of voice profiles. Amazon Echo devices will be able to recognize your voice and provide personalized answers to your questions. If you order something from Amazon it will automatically order it through your own Amazon account by recognizing your voice. You can set up your Voice profile through the Alexa App and we are going to see just how:
Table of Contents
Open up the Amazon Alexa App
- Get the Alexa app up and running on your smartphone or tablet.
- Open up Settings and then tap on Accounts
- In accounts, go to Your Voice and tap Begin to start the process.
OR just say, “Alexa, learn my voice” and Alexa will verbally guide you through these steps verbally.
Select your device
It is a possibility that you might be using more than one device in your house. In such a case you would have to select the device you want to interact while adding the voice profile. If you are using the app, select the device from the drop-down menu. We advise that if you have more than one device, then you should turn the microphone of the other devices using the Microphone Off button on the device. Also when interacting with the device while adding your voice profiles make sure you do so in a quiet environment and the Echo device being close to you, where it can hear your voice clearly.
Go with the flow
Tapping on the next option after selecting your device will provide you with a series of phrases that you would have to speak out loud in order for Alexa to learn your voice. You just have to follow the instructions on the screen and say the phrases as they show up. If you mess up while saying any phrase, you have an option of repeating the phrase again by selecting the Try Again option. After completing all the phrases, tap on Complete. You will be given a confirmation by Alexa as she will tell you how good a job you have done. Once Alexa has learned your voice, all the other devices that you initially turned off, will also be able to recognize your voice through Alexa.
Let’s test
You can easily test whether your voice profile has been added by asking Alexa, “Who am I?” and if she is able to recognize you by telling you your name then the process has been successful. Although if it is unable to give the correct answer then give Alexa 15- 20 minutes as in some cases it takes a little time. Amazon also has a Help and Feedback option in the menu of the Alexa app, if you are having some problem even after following these steps, you can consider that. You can add more voice profiles so that each and every member of the house has his own individualized experience.
Ask Questions
You can ask Alexa to call or message a person and it will automatically recognize your voice and call the person from your contact list. Your music requests will also be personalized as per your taste of music.
Limitations
Voice profile supports Calling/Messaging, shopping, flash Briefing, the Amazon music. But it also poses some security threats as someone having a similar voice as yours might be able to access your personal data or order through your account causing financial losses, so it is advisable to take further security measures.
The smart voice recognition technology is still being developed and improved and Alexa in itself is being updated every day, as more and more skills for Alexa are being rolled out. Even Amazon promotes you to code for Alexa to improve your overall experience of such a wonderful technology.
