All major chipset companies have been working really hard to usher in the new 7 nm processor, and the latest updates suggest that Samsung has finished developing 7 nm process technology six months ahead of schedule, which is all set to be used by the next generation of chipsets. And Huawei Kirin 980 is the latest chipset to join the list of chipsets to use a 7 nm processor, along with Snapdragon 855 and SAMSUNG Exynos 9820, and it is scheduled to go into mass production sometime this quarter.
TSMC has already started the mass production of 7 nm processors in the first quarter of 2018, and it is only a matter of time before Huawei’s flagship chipset, Kirin 980, goes into mass production itself; and is produced in advance.
Apart from the fact that it will be using 7 nm processors, not much else has been revealed regarding the parameters related to Kirin 980. However, it is known that the chipset will come with the latest A75 architecture of ARM, the NPU will belong to the second generation, and the GPU will use a self-developed architecture.
In the past few years, Huawei has made rapid progress, and Samsung’s development of the 7 nm processor has reduced the performance gap between Qualcomm and Samsung’s flagship chipsets considerably. The culmination of such progress may be revealed in Huawei’s release of the Mate series (or Mate 20) flagship in the second half of the year.
