Guo Ping, Huawei’s rotating chairman announced plans to make Shenzhen a 5G powered city. Speaking at the press conference of “Lighting Up Shenzhen, a 5G-powered Smart City” held on the 17th of August 2020.
As the first phase of global 5G deployment begins to wrap up, we need to strengthen our focus on industry applications. This will help us unleash the full potential of 5G and achieve business success with 5G. – Guo Ping
Huawei intends on collaborating with carriers, industry applications, and other partners to build an all-inclusive intelligent solution by employing the advantages of 5 major tech domains: industry applications, pervasive AI, connectivity, computing, and cloud. The success of 5G commercially is dependent on the harmony between these 5 domains.
Earlier this year, the 3GPP Release 16 (R16) specification was frozen thereby supporting the growth of 5G powered applications in the industry. A symbiosis of these technologies will aid the realization of the full scope of 5G by helping build smart cities and mobilize the digital economy even more. At present, there are 100 million+ 5G users and 92 carriers deploying commercial 5G networks. With these technologies, Huawei aims to make Shenzhen a digital showcase city of the world.
At the conference, Mr. Ping emphasized that the end goal of creating this digital showcase city was to show the rest of the world how local residents and enterprises can be privy to superior services. This would improve the quality of life, induce a better governance system, and harbor a sense of accomplishment. The industry will become stronger and locals will have more developmental opportunities.
There are 3 foundational elements to a smart-city:
- An intelligent network (5G based) that can uphold, even at the city’s most grassroots level units, real-time sensing and feedback of data.
- For an intensive and extensive unified municipal management data interconnection, a single network must be created by integrating vertical data systems from various government agencies and other industries.
- Ultimately, it should make intelligent experiences far better and build a real, state of the art 5G powered smart city by giving government agencies greater accessibility to AI-enabled business processes, and AI-enabled applications and data that can turn municipal knowledge to capabilities.
The synergy of industry applications, 5G, computing, AI, and cloud has the ability to provide industries with “all scenario intelligence” by setting of a chain reaction. Smart ports, factories, airports, and grids already provide an example of how this can be used.
New networks that not only use consumer internet but also industrial internet will provide grater benefits to a digitized economy. The direction will be tuned towards assured and reliable network performance indicators like speed and latency, therefore altering what is expected from ICT infrastructure. This will make new networks “future-proof” and create the “all-scenario smart cities”.
Mr. Ping noted that the company’s many years of service and existence has created a “fertile soil” of an open cloud, pipe, computing, and device platform. This “soil” can be used by independent software vendors, cloud ecosystem partners, and system integrators to focus on industry necessities. In order for further growth and collaboration, Huawei will continue to use OpenLabs to quicken the digital metamorphosis of the industry and to better serve its customers.
