In March of this year, during the press event for the Huawei P30 series, a collaboration was announced between Huawei and the Korean fashion brand Gentle Monster. Together they develop their first Huawei smart glasses. It must be stylish AR / VR glasses that look like normal sunglasses. No camera is integrated either, so that a slim frame can be maintained and, moreover, privacy can be guaranteed. A series of new trademark applications indicate that the development is progressing steadily and may possibly result in an official introduction to IFA 2019.

Huawei AR Glass and VR Glass

On August 14, Huawei Technologies applied for two trademarks at the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) and at the UK IPO (Intellectual Property Office) for the names Huawei AR Glass and Huawei VR Glass.

Both applications are categorized as Class 9, with the description; ‘smartglasses; smartwatches; smartphones; 3D spectacles; sunglasses; eyeglasses’.

The applications have been submitted by Forresters from Munich, Germany. Earlier this month the same company also filed trademark applications for the names Huawei SuperSensing Camera and Cine Lens, both are probably meant for the Mate 30 series, which is expected around October.

Huawei smart glasses with a speech assistant

Earlier this year, Huawei already shared the first details about its AR glasses under development. The Huawei smart glasses would have a built-in speech assistant. Thanks to a built-in microphone and speakers, making phone calls through smart glasses is possible. The glasses are IP67 certified, making them resistant to water and dust.

In addition, AR / VR glasses might be charged wirelessly via the supplied leather case with USB Type-C connection. The Huawei smart glasses will be provided with a fairly large 2,200 mAh battery.

An official release date was not yet discussed, although there was talk in the corridors about a launch around July 2019. However, to date, Huawei has remained silent, possibly that the affair with America has caused some delay. Nevertheless, it is quite possible that Huawei will still be presenting its new smart glasses at IFA 2019. This annual consumer electronics fair will start on September 6, 2019, in Berlin, Germany.

Huawei has already gained some experience with VR. After all the company has already released two virtual reality headsets, which by the way were equipped with Huawei’s own chipset. In 2017, the company also put a video online in which the AR glasses were demonstrated, but at the time it was a fairly large pair of glasses, the new variant should be a lot more discreet.

At the beginning of this year, Huawei was also granted a patent for Huawei AR glasses, but this model worked in combination with a smartwatch, which you could attach in the right-hand spectacle leg. This makes the smart glasses extra heavy and also not really stable – after all, the smartwatch is attached to one side of the leg. It looks like the smart glasses that Huawei is developing will be much more comfortable to wear.
