In a bid to enhance efficient data centers, the leading global hybrid cloud, and AI firm, IBM has today introduced new IBM z16 and LinuxONE Rockhopper 4 options designed to provide a modern, flexible hybrid cloud platform to support digital transformation for a range of IT environments.

The new alternatives, which are based on IBM’s Telum processor, are created with sustainability in mind for extremely effective data centers, assisting clients in adjusting to a digital economy and persistent global instability.

The firm noted that the new IBM z16 and LinuxONE 4 single frame and rack mount options, supported by LinuxONE Expert Care, will be generally available globally from IBM and certified business partners beginning on May 17, 2023.

Introducing New IBM z16 and LinuxONE Options

The IBM z16 multi-frame, introduced in April 2022, has contributed to the transformation of numerous sectors through real-time AI inferencing at scale and quantum-safe cryptography.

When it debuts in September 2022, IBM LinuxONE Emperor 4 will have the scale, performance, and security that customers demand while also reducing energy use and data center floor space requirements.

In data center environments where space, sustainability, and uniformity are crucial, the new single frame and rack mount configurations broaden client infrastructure options and aid in bringing these advantages.

“IBM remains at the forefront of innovation to help clients weather storms generated by an ever-changing market,” – Ross Mauri, General Manager, IBM zSystems and LinuxONE. “We’re protecting clients’ investments in existing infrastructure while helping them to innovate with AI and quantum-safe technologies. These new options let companies of all sizes seamlessly co-locate IBM z16 and LinuxONE Rockhopper 4 with distributed infrastructure, bringing exciting capabilities to those environments.”

With features for partition-level power monitoring and related environmental parameters, the new IBM z16 and LinuxONE 4 products are designed for the modern data center to assist optimize flexibility and sustainability.

Linux workload consolidation, for instance, can cut energy consumption and space requirements by 67 percent and 75 percent, respectively, as compared to operating Linux workloads on comparable x86 servers in the same place and under the same conditions. These new setups are designed to give the same renowned IBM transaction processing and security at scale.

Additionally, the firm further added that installing these configurations in the data center can help create a new class of use cases, including sustainable design, optimizing AI solutions, data privacy as well as edge computing.

“IBM z16 and LinuxONE systems are known for security, resiliency, and transaction processing at scale,” said Matt Eastwood, SVP, WW Research, IDC.

“Clients can now access the same security and resiliency standards in new environments with the single frame and rack mount configurations, giving them flexibility in the data center. Importantly, this also opens up more business opportunities for partners who will be able to reach an expanded audience by integrating IBM systems and LinuxONE capabilities to their existing footprints.”

With the new IBM LinuxONE Rockhopper 4 servers, IBM will offer IBM LinuxONE Expert Care. IBM Expert Care assists enterprises in selecting the best services by integrating and repackaging hardware and software support services into a tiered support strategy. Clients will receive increased value from this support for LinuxONE Rockhopper 4 as a result of predictable maintenance expenses and less deployment and operational risk.
