The Indian smartphone market is said to have suffered an 18% shipments decrease in the first quarter of 2023. This is contained in the latest data from TechInsights. According to the report, the market recorded an increase of 18% year-on-year to 30.7 million units, with Samsung, Vivo, and Xiaomi in ranking as the top three, with market shares respectively 20%, 18%, and 17% in 2023.

Indian Smartphone Market in Q1

According to TechInsights, 57% of smartphone shipments in India during the first quarter came from offline distribution channels, and the share of mobile phone retailers peaked at more than 15%, the highest share of the segmented channel market in more than 20 consecutive quarters. Mobile phone manufacturers are expected to speed up the process of creating high-end experience stores in India’s first-tier cities as they increasingly seek direct control over distribution.

Additionally, the largest sub-segment channel, eCommerce, remained to account for 31% of smartphone market shipments in India. Flipkart and Amazon are the industry leaders in eCommerce retail and distribution; it is unclear whether these companies’ distribution strategies will change as the popularity of online channels increases in the second half of this year and 5G models take over the market.

Global Smartphone Shipments in Q1

Meanwhile, a similar report from the Canalys analyst shows that the global smartphone market recorded a 4.7% increase against last year’s decline. According to the firm, despite a 13.3% year-over-year fall in worldwide smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2023, high-end smartphone shipments climbed globally in the quarter by 4.7%, outpacing overall smartphone shipments.

According to Canalys, the following are the top 15 models of high-end smartphones shipped globally in the first quarter of 2023: Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple iPhone 14 Pro, Apple iPhone 14, Apple iPhone 13, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, Apple iPhone 14 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S23, Apple iPhone 12, Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4, Apple iPhone SE, Samsung Galaxy S22, Mi 13, Huawei Mate 50 and Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G.
