Just after Instagram’s co-founders resigned and Facebook’s former VP of News Feed was named Head of Instagram, the information comes that Instagram is working on a prototype Location History feature, suggesting that Location History data collected from Location Services within the app will be leveraged to bolster Facebook’s ad targeting.
Just after its announcement of launching two new features, Nametag and school community Instagram yet again brings forth another new update. Meanwhile, Facebook has provided a detailed explanation after the new feature was discovered.

Instagram is prototyping a new privacy setting that would provide users’ exact GPS coordination to Facebook even when they are not using the app. The report says that the users will be able to see their geo-tagged data in their Facebook Profile’s Activity Log, and it will include maps of the places they visit.

According to Instagram, this setting “Allows Facebook Products, including Instagram and Messenger, to build and use a history of precise locations received through Location Services on your device.” And if it is on, Facebook will periodically add the current precise location to its Location History even if you leave the app. It’s not clear if and when Instagram plans to launch this feature.

Back in 2012, Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion, and at that time, Instagram had just released its Android app and was known for its photo filters. Now, Instagram is one of the most visited apps with its stories feature and its new focus on long-form video streaming. It continues to keep up its reputation as it brings forth more features, features that are hoped to be enjoyed by its users.
