Korea’s leading telecom company, KT, released a mobile phone app on Monday which will able to monitor the air quality and provide information on fine dust. The Aircheck is done not only for the area surrounding the phone but also for the entire nation. The information that the users will get will be in real-time. This project of KT is called the “Air Map Korea” project. It was launched in September 2017 in contribution to the Korean government’s effort to reduce fine dust levels in the air.

The app is released on the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. It is indeed a noble venture and a useful app when it comes to the declining global environment. The mobile app takes the help of the Internet of Things and big data analytics to monitor and analyze the air quality 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.

KT has set up about 2,000 air quality monitoring stations so far to accurately read the fine dust levels in the air. It also is looking to set up another 500 monitoring stations and deploy 7,000 mobile sensors in the future. It will be able to check the air quality and suggest safe routes to schools and strolls by integrating the pedestrian traffic with the public data.

KT is also aiming for global consumers for their app, as was suggested by Lee Dong-Hyun, KT’s executive vice president of the big data business support unit.

KT Air Map Korea project is going beyond the domestic market. In light of the mobile app’s launch, KT will provide detailed information on fine dust and suggest ways to reduce fine dust on daily lives – Lee Dong-myun, KT‘s executive vice president of big data business support unit

He further added, “Through the launch of the mobile application, KT will suggest ways of reducing fine dust levels and preventing any damages. We will also cooperate with international organizations to improve the global environment.”

To help people be more aware of the air quality around them, KT will seek out the help of other relevant institutions, and they are looking forward to installing traffic lights that will offer the public dust information. That is not all, and KT is also planning on providing audio and video guidance services through its TV service, AI and smart speaker system, Giga Genie.
