LG came up with one of the first robotic vacuum cleaners in the world 16 years ago, endorsing a revolutionary point of progress in technology. The company’s leadership in the concerned markets led its engineers to introduce HOM-BOT® Turbo+ in the field of home appliance robotics. The device was recognized by Seoul National University (SNU) Robotics & Intelligent Systems Lab, the robotic program of the top university in South Korea.

Today’s robots are driven by AI or artificial intelligence to perform their given activities. These robots may not require high intelligence but are able enough to learn from experience. Well, not all vacuum robots pursue knowledge at the same cognitive level, as per the results of the SNU Robotics Lab.

The university examined the robot vacuums’ intelligence based on perception, judgment, and action. The results were categorized into one of three intelligence levels. The Hom-Bot of LG Electronics earned the highest marks on the level termed by the testers as ‘Child’. The other two levels are ‘Ape’ and ‘Dolphin’. The learning capability of the Hom-Bot was equated with the same as a six-seven-year-old child.

The usage of the CNN (Convolutional neural network) technique by LG helps its robots differentiate between a human and a dog based on stored image data. LG doesn’t just stop there; it inputs the LG DeepThinQ™ technology to the latest model that was promoted from the ‘Ape’ level two years ago. This technology also significantly helped the Hom-Bot develop its perception and judgment acuity, two of the major features of any high-performance AI.

So, what exactly makes the Hom-Bot better than other models? It is its ability to identify obstacles while charting effective courses through the house. Additionally, it is also able to recognize and allow for human intervention. For instance, the vacuum waits briefly for a human to pass when it comes across the individual. As for furniture and other immobile objects, the robot does not wait but continues cleaning. The SNU Robotics Lab found this analysis process of the robot to be noteworthy and unique in the category.

Song Dae-Hyun, the president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solutions Company, said that the company aims to continue working on developing the smartest appliances. According to him, the company is working on robots not just for the home but also to serve airports. The newest robots of LG look forward to starting serving the Incheon International Airport later this month.
