Three folding phones from LG was on the web earlier this month. The first model was a folding telephone with a Z-Fold design. In the second design, the display was on the outside, and then there was a third foldable phone from LG, with the display on the inside.
On the exact same day, the company filed another design patent with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration). This time it concerns a roll-up smartphone.
LG roll-up smartphone with a screen that can bend in two directions
On February 21, 2019, LG Electronics filed a design patent for the rollable device with the Chinese patent office. The patent was published on August 9, 2019, after which it was also directly included in the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) database. 18 sketches are included.
The patented LG smartphone has a roll-up display that can be wrapped around the entire housing. A small frame border is only visible on the top and bottom, it seems likely that the cameras and the required sensors will be processed here. However, these are not visible in the drawings.
It is clear from the pictures that you can bend the screen in two directions thanks to two flexible hinges. Do you carry the device with you while you are on the move? Then you can fold the screen inwards so that it remains well protected against scratches and bumps. If you want to use the roll-up phone, there are several options available.
First of all, it is possible to completely wrap the flexible screen around the housing of the LG roll-up smartphone. One side will then consist of the screen surface, the other side will not. The front and back also consist of the screen surface, so you have all the benefits of a dual-screen phone.
There are no notches, it is a full-screen design. Although the design patent does not provide far-reaching information about how the screen is held in place, it seems likely that this happened magnetically.
If you need a larger format screen? Then you can pull the screen off on one side of the housing, after which a tablet format display is created. The screen is enlarged by 200% compared to its most compact form.
The large screen surface ensures that you can use this mobile device for a large number of purposes. This device is perfect for watching videos or films. A larger screen also provides a more intense gaming experience when gaming.
It was already known that LG has a roll-up smartphone in development. At the beginning of this year, the president of the company announced at CES 2019 that he had a smartphone in development with a roll-up screen.
In April, LG Electronics also submitted five trademark applications for possible model names of these future smartphone models. Think of LG The Roll, but the names Double Roll, Dual Roll, Bi-Roll and Roll Canvas were also recorded.
Next month LG will first present a new dual-screen phone during IFA 2019, probably the LG V60 ThinQ with a GamePad. In addition, the LG G8x ThinQ is expected.
The company also submitted a trademark earlier this month for the name LG V60S, possibly a cheap variant of the V60. However, this name is currently only registered in Korea, so we do not expect this device at IFA 2019.
