MacOS 12.2 Bug: Users Experience Battery Drain Due to Bluetooth Accessories

Some Mac users who have updated macOS Monterey 12.2 are suffering high battery loss during sleep mode, presumably owing to Bluetooth accessories repeatedly awakening the laptops.

Over the previous few days, users have reported the problem on the MacRumors Forums, Reddit, and Twitter, although it’s unclear how prevalent it is.

Some people claim that their laptop’s battery level has fallen from 100% to 0% in a single night. The device was set to sleep. The problem, however, does not appear to affect all users.

A couple of customers used Terminal to try to figure out what was causing the problem and discovered that Bluetooth accessories are regularly producing a “DarkWake from Deep Idle,” which causes the Mac to wake up from sleep, draining the battery. Both Intel-based and M1-based Macs appear to be affected by the problem.

Bluetooth devices coupled with a MacBook frequently wake the system from sleep mode due to a fault with the Apple operating system’s sleep mode. As a result, the battery life is drastically reduced.

It’s unknown why the mistake only affects a small percentage of MacBook users. According to Macrumors, the laptop will not wake up if no Bluetooth device is linked to the system.

MacBook owners can simply switch off Bluetooth when they aren’t using their computers to solve the problem. Of course, this makes sense only if no Bluetooth devices are required to stay connected to the notebook while it is in sleep mode. Otherwise, the laptop should be linked to the power supply to avoid a total drain.

It is still unknown whether Apple is working on a remedy to the problem. The manufacturer has yet to comment on the issue, and no patch has been published as a result.

It’s also unclear whether the Bluetooth issues affect the MacOS 12.3 beta version, which was just released. In the coming days, Apple is expected to release an update that will correct the problem.
