As far back as 2015, Apple unveiled its last Watch lineup. Now, the tech giant has been reportedly planning to unveil a new Watch lineup after eight years. According to TrendForce, the new Apple Watch in 2024 will use a ground-breaking Micro LED display technology.
This will be coming as Apple decided to expand the Micro LED technology by introducing the display into more of its electronic products. To satisfy the requirements of professionals and outdoor sports enthusiasts, it is anticipated that the display size would be increased to more than 2 inches as well.
Therefore, Ams Osram is expected to be benefitting from the expansion of Micro LED display technology into Apple products. Going by the market surveys, from 2026 to 2030, the application range of Micro LED technology may broaden to include AR glasses, mobile phones, automobile displays, and other products.
Micro LED Display Coming to More Apple Products
As pointed out by TrendForce analysts, Apple has always taken its time and been cautious when deciding whether to adopt new technology. Once the technology is approved, it is typically used in more than one device.
The best illustration of display technology making its way into Apple’s product lineup is OLED, which will be used in products like the Watch, iPhone, iPad which will launch in 2024, and even the MacBook in two to three years. Therefore, TrendForce predicted that after 2024, Micro LED technology will gain in popularity. Its introduction will progressively extend to other Apple gadgets as well.
Why Choosing Micro LED Display
The emerging display technologies known as Micro OLED and Micro LED are known for their high Pixel per Inch, PPI. However, because of the limitations of intrinsic materials, Micro OLED is unable to match the ultra-high brightness performance of Micro LED. Although there are market reports that Apple’s upcoming head-mounted device may use Micro OLED display technology, fully transparent AR smart glasses will eventually need optical waveguide technology because of the optical waveguide.
Micro LED, which has the benefit of high brightness, naturally has a more flexible matching area than other display technologies for the loss of 99% produced by the original brightness of the display. Therefore, Micro LED is extremely likely to replace LCD as the preferred display technology for Quescreen if Apple ever releases entirely transparent AR glasses.
OLED foldable phones, however, are already the consensus of the brand’s next-generation flagship specifications field, at least based on the Android camp’s current crop of handsets.
According to TrendForce, The upcoming technology may be flexibly matched with stiff substrates like glass and CMOS and also has a very good match with flexible substrates like PI, which may be one reason why Apple has not yet entered the foldable OLED industry.
Accordingly, Micro LED might also become the display technology for iPhone products to transition into folding, scrolling, or even extended screens in the future, and it could become another crucial technology for Apple to achieve product innovation and surpass rival companies.
