MicroLED panels are the promising aspirant to build augmented reality (AR) devices than OLED display panels, according to a Samsung Display executive. Samsung Display targets the AR device market and focuses on developing 6600 PPI-level micro LED. There are reasons why MicroLED panels for AR devices are more suitable than OLED display panels.

AR devices usually demand a high brightness level to establish the new light-emitting diodes, which are far away from OLED. Samsung Display Group leader Kim Min-woo told a MicroLED Display Symposium in Seoul. Compared to LEDs, OLEDs have customarily evolved with lower brightness levels.

It has been reported that Samsung is developing OLED on silicon and LED on silicon panels, amalgamating semiconductors with OLEDs or LEDs. If a Display crafted using these technologies can accomplish ultra-high resolution in thin sizes.

It can have the objectives of high brightness, high contrast, high PPI, fast reaction speed, and low power consumption, and it is suitable for AR/VR devices. At the event, Kim said that AR, Virtual reality, and mixed reality have different paths to follow and require specific specifications.

Why use MicroLED Panels for AR devices?

AR would be needed more brightness than VR due to its interaction with the real world. It also denotes the components of its need to be lighter with a proportionally small panel. Kim also said the AR display should be at least 5,000 ppi, with a pixel pitch of 5 microns or less and red, green, and blue subpixels of 3 microns.

Micro LED display technology embraces self-luminous Micron scale LEDs driven off by light-generating pixel units and sets up to create a high-density LED array. When juxtaposed with LCD and OLED displays, Micro LED chips have high integration and self-illumination. Micro LED has excellent brightness, resolution, contrast, energy consumption, service life, response speed, and thermal stability.
