New hints point out that Microsoft is already gearing up for the official launch on the second generation of its virtual and augmented reality glasses. Announced in 2016, the first Hololens already has been three years old on the market without a major hardware upgrade, perhaps this is already a big indication that the Microsoft Hololens 2 is ready to arrive with even more accurate and well finished than the previous.
According to information obtained by the site Neowin, Microsoft is developing what can be called momentarily of Hololens 2 with the Snapdragon 850 processor of Qualcomm, the same chip used in Always Connected PCs like Galaxy Book2 and Yoga C630 of Lenovo.
The site points out that as the first generation of Hololens used an Intel Atom chipset, it would make more sense for the second version of the device to arrive with Snapdragon 850 thanks to the Holographic Processing Unit (HPU). It is said that the device will depend a lot on its HPU and because the Snapdragon 850 offers an embedded artificial intelligence co-processor, it would be easier to offer greater efficiency, faster speeds, and greater accuracy.
Focusing on always-on or instantly available features – which implies the name of Always Connected PCs itself – the Qualcomm chip also offers the Snapdragon X20 modem with 4G LTE and speeds up to 1.2 GB/s.
Following the same predictions from months ago, Microsoft seems to be still planning to introduce Hololens 2 in 2019, but despite Qualcomm’s recent launch of the new Snapdragon 8cx chips, the efficiency and power of the new Hololens would be even greater.
However, the implication of using the Snapdragon 850 platform may be due to the software. Microsoft may be developing Hololens 2 software with the new Windows Core OS, which will offer much more performance than normal.
