Since the release of Microsoft’s Windows 11 system updates, several users have been lamenting numerous errors in the app. In August last year, a user who experienced notepad, paint, and script failure after updating to Windows 11 SV2 bemoaned his grievance via Answers.Microsoft.com.

Windows 11 System Error

According to the user, after restoring the laptop to the factory image, it could not use notepad, open notepad, Photos open image files, and script to execute some UWP applications the first time, but it could work the second time.

Then, Microsoft admitted Windows 11 system error and guided him on how to fix this problem. However, in a new development today, the instability of the Windows 11 system has happened again, as reported by Technews.

The new errors are similar to the initial ones, as affected users lamented that after restoring Windows 11 22H2 version, native applications such as Notepad, Little Painter, Cortana, Terminal, and Office might not be able to be opened or run normally.

Hence, affected users may experience the following issues while using Windows 11 Education Edition, Home Edition, Professional Edition, Enterprise Edition, or IoT Enterprise Edition:

  • The error message “This application cannot be opened” is displayed.
  • The Start menu repeats options for applications.
  • When trying to open the app, the app is not responding.
  • An I/O (Input/Output) error may occur, and the application does not respond or hangs.

Microsoft Confirms Windows 11 Errors

Confirming the errors, Microsoft announced through the support document that after the Windows 11 22H2 version performs system restore, native applications such as Notepad, Little Painter, and Office may not be able to run normally.

According to the tech giant, when the user performs a system restore to a past point in time, multiple applications using the MSIX Windows application suite format may not be able to open and use normally.

Currently known issues include the potential inability to launch and utilize applications like Notepad, Little Painter, Office, Cortana, and Terminal normally. Additionally, Microsoft highlighted that this is not an exhaustive list. Any application that uses the MSIX Windows application suite format can run into issues.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has provided several interim remedies for impacted customers but did not specify if the issue is being fixed. You can try restarting the application, reinstalling it from the Windows Store or other sources, or running Windows Upgrade to update the system.

Consequently, if you’ve recently run into problems with built-in Windows apps not opening, you’re not alone, there are temporary workarounds to fix the crash, and eventually, a system update will fix the bug.
