As is the case with the introduction of any new technology, the under-screen camera failed to make the best first impression. The idea of such a camera obviously appeals to the consumers, but the earliest models that came out with this technology had a few issues, and the users were not impressed with it. For example, ZTE’s Axon 20 was the first-ever smartphone that featured an under-screen camera.

It came out in 2020, and the general verdict on the phone is that the feature was not up-to-the-mark. The quality of the camera was incredibly poor, and the area of the screen looked very distracting. Samsung followed up with the inclusion of an under-screen camera in the Galaxy Z Fold 3, but this one, too, had similar issues.

However, things are looking up, and the Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has launched the Mi MIX 4 with an under-screen camera using a different approach to the technology. The Chinese manufacturer made improvements to the previous generation of under-screen technology and improved it.

For the MIX 4, Xiaomi shrunk the size of the pixels without reducing the number instead of having a lower resolution area of the screen that allows the light to move through to the camera. On November 23, the spin-out camera module and terminal applied by Xiaomi made its appearance on the Chinese patent publication report.

The new patent shows that the new design hides the camera in the middle frame of the mobile phone, and it does not occupy screen space. This also ensures that the screen-to-body ratio of the smartphone gets increased. Moreover, the patent also revealed that the camera can pop up quicker than its previous generation.

Xiaomi is set to launch the Mi 12 series in December 2021, and various reports have confirmed that this smartphone will come with an under-screen camera. Moreover, the smartphone will run on Snapdragon 898 chipset. However, it is not clear yet if the recently announced patent will be used for the Mi 12.
